About Cape Sebastian Oregon

This park is known for its stunning views of the Oregon Coast. There is a short trail that leads to an overlook, where you can see for miles in all directions. You can also hike down to the beach, where you can go tidepooling, beachcombing, or fishing.

 

Cape Sebastian State Scenic Corridor is known for its dramatic scenery, which includes:

 

  • One of the highest points along the southern Oregon coast, jutting out westward nearly 700 feet vertically, making it one of the most expansive ocean viewpoints in Oregon.
  • A wooded promontory offering spectacular vistas of over 80 miles of the shoreline, stretching from Humbug Mountain in the north to the Californian border in the south.
  • Hunters Cove, a beautiful sandy beach with scattered large rocks, located on the south side of the cape.

 

The park also features a well-maintained trail system, with the Cape Sebastian Trail being the most popular. This moderate 3.3-mile out-and-back trail offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and wildlife.  Another activity visitors enjoy here is whale watching, particularly during the gray whale’s biannual migrations.

Things To Do Near Cape Sebastian, OR

Go whale watching: Cape Sebastian is a great place to go whale watching, especially from December to April. Gray whales are the most common type of whale seen in the area, but you may also spot humpback whales, blue whales, and orcas.

Explore tide pools: The tide pools at Cape Sebastian are full of interesting marine life. You can see starfish, sea urchins, anemones, crabs, and more. Be sure to watch the tides and only explore the tide pools when they are exposed.

Hike the Oregon Coast Trail: The Oregon Coast Trail is a 42-mile long hiking trail that goes from Cape Sebastian to Brookings. The trail is a great way to see the beauty of the Oregon Coast up close.

Visit the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor: This scenic corridor is located north of Cape Sebastian and is known for its dramatic sea stacks and rock formations. There are several short trails in the corridor that lead to overlooks with stunning views. 

Go surfing: The surfing at Cape Sebastian is good for experienced surfers. There are several surf breaks in the area, and the waves can get quite large.

Go fishing: The fishing at Cape Sebastian is good for salmon, halibut, and rockfish. You can fish from the shore or from a boat.

Visit the Port Orford Heads State Park: This park is located south of Cape Sebastian and is known for its lighthouse. The lighthouse is open for tours, and there are also several trails in the park that lead to overlooks with stunning views.

Explore the town of Gold Beach: Gold Beach is a small town located near Cape Sebastian. There are several shops and restaurants in town, and it is also a great place to base yourself for exploring the area.
